Jason Lord is an interdisciplinary artist based in Durham, NC. He’s currently in his final year of the MFA program in Studio Art at the University of North Carolina - Greensboro.

Many of the abstract drawings and prints I’ve made in the last couple of years refer to written language, diagrams, or other standard forms of communication, but the marks, alphabets, or data sets are invented and have no specific or universally agreed-upon meaning–language without context; codes to crack. For me, one of the more compelling paradoxes of the GF movies is one that I’ve seen play out my whole life in various communities and which is illustrated without nuance in the baptism scene in the first film: claiming goodness by declaring it through the pageantry and rituals of faith while behaving in an unethical or immoral way that contradicts the teachings of the religion. Ipocriti, d’accordo?  

I was excited to be invited to participate in the Godfather Party in part because I have so damn much artwork that’s black and white and/or red–it was fun to have a studio visit with Weird Productions as we sifted through piles of work to select for the event.
