22.5" x 18" with frame. Original art made with ccrylic, Dutch gold leaf, rhinestones, and nail art on canvas.

The primary reference was a black and white portrait of Prince from 2013 by photographers Inez & Vinoodh. Brocade drapery and an ornate frame in the style of paintings of Louis the XIV are a nod to Prince’s name and his Baroque fashion phase. The gilded elements were influenced by artists Tawny Chatmon and Stephanie Rew, who use gold to add drama and signify the importance of their subjects. The metal accents on the jacket mimic clothing designs by Call and Response, and the rhinestones were sparked by Mickalene Thomas paintings displayed at the NCMA and 21c Hotel. The symbols allude to Prince’s use of the Love Symbol and his music. Of course, the color scheme and the overall extraness of the piece were inspired by Prince himself.

Ellen Cabacungan is a YouTube-taught painter based in Chapel Hill, NC. Her affinity for oversaturated palettes and maximalist compositions lend her work a sense of exuberance. When she’s not painting, she enjoys spending time with her family and collecting painting supplies.
